William researched, planned, and continues to lead four large-scale conservation initiatives. Each initiative includes conservation service projects as well as student and public education programs. His Eastern Box Turtle Initiative includes: completion of a habitat study, education about the species and the importance of the shrubland habitat to multiple species, and subsequent changes to the maintenance of shrublands. His Invasive Species Management and Prevention work includes: a tree study he completed with the U.S. Forest Service, efforts to save Eastern hemlocks, a foundation species crucial to forest ecosystems, and an education campaign on how to prevent the spread of invasive species. As part of his Water Quality Initiative students participated in four different types of conservation projects: river and creek clean ups, "live stake" installation to prevent erosion and sediment pollution, and wetland and riparian zone restorations. William's Recycling Initiative focuses on hard to recycle items, including electronic waste. The projects include partnerships with ten different conservation organizations. More than 1000 students have directly contributed more than 3000 hours to these efforts. William has also volunteered on coral reef and other ocean conservation projects. He founded and leads a program to provide outdoors experiences to disadvantaged students.
