Joshua Xu is a junior at Davis Senior High School in Davis, California, and he has a strong passion for protecting the environment and natural resources. Realizing the tremendous amount of food that is wasted and the numerous environmental and health risks it causes, Joshua has started to work on a research project to investigate the catabolic diversity of microorganisms and substances on organic kitchen waste, with a goal to develop a novel microbial compound or enhance the efficiency of existing compost solutions that may reduce the duration of waste decomposition to a time frame within a few days, making it more viable to be implemented in a consumer setting. The ultimate goal is to turn today’s kitchen waste into tomorrow’s fertilizer and promote the sustainable backyard concept to every household. Outside of school, Joshua is passionate about creating a community benefit working as a volunteer for the City of Davis, Here2Assist, tutoring elementary mathematics, and engaging in his own research among other things. He competes in policy debate on the National Circuit along with the DHS Debate team, where he also enjoys teaching new debaters.
