Claire is studying computer science at Carnegie Mellon University. She got her first taste of machine learning (ML) in an AI4ALL summer program. Since then, she has delved into research that uses data science to tackle pressing societal issues. One project that she initiated and led predicted stress in teens from their physiological signals using wearable devices and ML. For this research, she was awarded a competitive high school research grant from the AI4ALL organization. She presented her findings at the Joint Statistical Meeting international conference and published a first-authored paper in the conference proceedings. Claire studied the effects of environmental factors on bacteriophage genomes with bioinformatics tools to improve phage therapy, an antibiotics alternative, at the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Sciences. She has also investigated associations between Covid-case distributions, racial distributions, and election history in the swing states, using them to predict government policy consequences. Claire also works with a lab at Penn State to optimize models for CO2 emissions in urban areas.
