Anne’s hometown experienced minimal snowfall this past winter. Her town is also predicted to have little rainfall over the summer, and the onset of fire season is a guarantee. These circumstances prompted Anne to apply for a Global Citizenship and Sustainability Grant. She received a $1,400 grant to develop three water-conserving gardens and a program to increase awareness about drought-tolerant landscaping. Anne reached out to the Head of the Local Tree Board and received hands-on learning about xeriscaping, which is gardening and landscaping designed specifically for water conservation. Anne created flyers detailing xeriscaping and passed out brochures at libraries, senior citizen homes, and numerous local businesses. She xeriscaped gardens located in the heart of her town during high-traffic hours in order to discuss her efforts with all pass-byers. Anne is a member of her school’s Sustainability and Global Studies Board. She is also a lifeguard and a backpacking, safety, and cooking guide.
